But Direct Line - one of the pioneers in the phone and internet insurance market - has other strings to its bow. These include travel cover. Direct Line, again like most providers, has different kinds of cover depending on who you are and what you are planning to do. There are single trip and annual polices and schemes called 'Discoverer' which provides cover for odysseys lasting between three and 18 months. There are limitations though. A major one is related to age. The maximum length of single cover available more than halves for travellers over 60, and if you are over 65 you can't get annual cover at all. The upper limit drops to 55 for the Discoverer package. Fair or unfair? Insurance companies tailor their services to certain markets for economic reasons, but considering that half the population is over 50 it's not unreasonable to predict that there might have to be a rethink about this sort of thing in future. For now, older customers could have a look at Saga - they don't offer annual cover either but the insurance is tailored to older people. Columbus Direct also have a special over-64 policy. But whoever you are, it's important to compare quotes and cover before you choose a policy - and then to make sure you understand exactly what it does and does not cover before you sign up to it.
